But Why?

This is a silly little project I decided to start because while I do play video games, and it is a huge part of my identity as a person, and I do like RPGs and JRPGs, I've never really played a Final Fantasy game. It's kind of shameful, really.

This is a silly little project I decided to start because while I do play video games, and it is a big part of my identity as a person, and while I do like RPGs and JRPGs, I've never really played a Final Fantasy game. I've started a handful of them, but never got very far and didn't commit. It's kind of shameful, really.

A lot of my friends are pretty big fans of this series. And I've heard a lot about it, seen a lot about it, and watched people cry over the alleged Final Fantasy VII remake. It's a big deal, I get that. To be completely honest, it was a source of bitterness for many years in my teenage and early-college youth. Like really, guys, is Cloud that deep and sexy? Is Sephiroth such a bad ass? Did I even spell that name right? I really don't know the answers to these questions. My only experience with those characters were in Kingdom Hearts. (Is Hades in FFVII? I can only guess.)

It took an episode of the Retronauts about the music of Nobuo Uematsu to make me think, "Man, I really need to play these games." And an idea was born. I continued to think about it, and I'm pretty certain at this point that I know just enough about Final Fantasy as a series to be horribly misinformed about it.*  Sure, I know tidbits here and there, but I'd say probably 70% the things I know about the series are pure conjecture. So, I decided to document what my conceptions of each game is before touching it, and chronicle my journey through playing them. Because, of course, I have to play through all of them in order. I'm not a monster.

At the urging of my friends, I'll probably stream/archive my playing, but I can't make any guarantees that it'll be interesting.
